article imageOp-Ed: The beauty of Blake Griffin's monstrous dunk on Kendrick Perkins

By David Silverberg     Jan 31, 2012 in Sports
Last night, NBA star Blake Griffin proved he's one of the most electrifying athletes in the game by slam-dunking over six-foot-ten centre Kendrick Perkins. There's good reason why the YouTube video is igniting the basketball blogosphere.
Call it the dunk of the year. Or at the very least, the dunk of the month (and there have been some spectacular plays already in NBA's shortened season).
Last night, with the L.A. Clippers squaring off against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Clippers forward Blake Griffin ran a pick-and-roll with point guard Chris Paul. Rolling to the bucket, Griffin received a nifty bounce pass and then leaped into the air. In trademark Griffin style, he dunked with one hand, posterizing the usually reliable shot-blocker Perkins. (The Clips won the game 112-100).
It was phenomenal. It was jaw-dropping impressive. And it's another example of Griffin's talent and his impresive ability to leap into the air like a 251-pound human spring.
Why such a big fuss over a dunk when we've seen a week filled with alley-oop highlights and last minute tips? Call it the perfect storm of an NBA dunk - Griffin leaps at a difficult angle over the 6'10 Perkins. He stretches out his arm in order to dunk the ball, way above the rim. He doesn't lose his grip on the ball as he flushes the bucket. He makes a perfect landing. The crowd goes nuts.
NBA coaches are weighing on Griffin's dunk. "That's amazing," Dwane Casey, the Toronto Raptors coach, said today. "That kid is unbelievable. That dunk is one of the all time greats as far as shots I’ve seen."
Few NBA highlights on YouTube attract more than 400,000 views within 12 hours. There's good reason why Griffin's dunk last night posted those kind of stats - NBA fans love watching athletes at the top of their game, and Griffin was truly on top of his game...and on top of the rim with a dunk I'll being watching over and over again.
