Lima - At least 26 people were killed and 10 injured this morning in a fire at a private rehabilitation center for drug and alcohol addiction in Lima, Peru.
The private drug and alcohol rehab center named "Christ is Love", located in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho, on the east side of the Peruvian capital, intended to assist the recovery of alcohol and drug addicts through the preaching of the Bible.
The initial versions about the fire indicate that it originated from the burning of a mattress followed by the explosion of a propane gas cylinder, amid a violent dispute among the addicts.
The authorities have reported that the “Christ is Love” Rehab Center was a clandestine organization lacking the required operating license and certification. The mayor of Lima, Susana Villarán, visited the location of the tragedy and expressed her support for the families of the deceased:
"We regret what happened, we have supported the victims and their families in every way possible, with ambulances and hospital services” said Villarán according to Peruvian news site RPP (in Spanish).
"We will help the families affected by this atrocious tragedy. At this point we do not know how many such sites exist, how many are operating. The investigations will be done at the right time, but now is the time to help the victims" said Mayor Villarán.
Antonio Zavala, commander of the Lima Fire Department, explained that on the first floor of the building there were about 40 people in a space no larger than eight by four meters, with a single point of entry and a heavy metal door which was blocked by fences and padlocks. For this reason most of the victims were killed by asphyxia rather than burns. The quick action of firefighters allowed the rescue of the bodies before they were incinerated.
