‘Good Day New York’ co-anchor and son of NYPD Commissioner, Greg Kelly, is under investigation for sexual assault that led to abortion; Kelly claims it was a consensual encounter.
On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, an approximately 30-year-old paralegal came forward, accusing Greg Kelly, co-anchor of Good Day New York and son of NYPD Commissioner, of sexual assaulting her on October 8, 2011.
The New York Times reports that the woman claims to have met Kelly on the street after which they went for drinks and came back to her office where he sexually assaulted her. After the alleged assault, the two continued contact through text message.
The woman claims she became pregnant as a result of the alleged assault, which resulted in an abortion. The details surrounding the alleged pregnancy and abortion are still under investigation.
Kelly has not made a public statement, but “strenuously denies” the allegations in a statement made by his attorney, Andrew M. Lankler.
According to a report in The Daily Mail, the woman “claims she was woozy from too much alcohol and doesn't remember parts of the evening.” However, the woman maintains her allegations and claims the encounter was not consensual.
New evidence of ongoing text messages between Kelly and the woman may be the determining factor in the investigation. According to multiple sources, there may have been “flirtatious” text messages between Kelly and the woman that led to the encounter. It is reported that the woman had also sent ongoing texts after the alleged assault, wondering why he hadn’t called.
The text messages are still being investigated to sort out the facts and it unknown as of yet whether these communications will incriminate or vindicate Kelly, according to ABC News.
While the circumstances are not entirely clear, Kelly is taking time off during the investigation.
