Let us start with this: if this is not a Super Bowl record, in fact if it is not a record worthy of Guinness, then this writer will spend one night in a chicken pen. Or somewhere fowl.
Okay, here is the thrust of it: The U.S. National Chicken Council (NCC) released a statement on Jan. 23 which reports that on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, Americans will eat 1.25 billion chicken wings. That translates to about 100 million pounds of wings.
Super Bowl Sunday: Chicken Wings Biggest Day
The NCC has released something called a 'Wing Report' and that is what the numbers they have crunched are telling them. Super Bowl Sunday is, the council says, the second biggest eating day in the U.S. every year, bigger than Christmas day and behind only Thanksgiving. Chicken wings are one of the most consumed food items on Super Bowl Sunday and the day sees more chicken wings consumed than any other day in the year.
"If the wings were laid end-to-end they would circle the circumference of the Earth more than twice," the NCC statement says. "A distance that would reach approximately a quarter of the way to the moon."
Surely that would be a Guinness record.
