Washington - U.S. Senator John Kerry had the opportunity to show off two black eyes and a broken nose at a ceremony in the White House Monday. Kerry suffered the injuries while playing ice hockey.
Cameras caught Kerry with black eyes and a bruised face while awaiting President Barack Obama's salute to the NHL's Boston Bruins for their 2011 Stanley Cup championship.
According to Huffington Post, the Massachusetts Democrat's office told reporters that the 68-year-old was injured during a ice hockey game with friends and family. He was hit in the face with a hockey stick.
Daily Mail reports cameras caught him showing off his shiners to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino in the East Room of the White House. Kerry spokesman Whitney Smith, also confirmed the accident to Boston Globe. The accident, according to Global Post, happened just before Kerry met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Huffington Post reported that Smith said: "He's totally fine. Very ironically he busted his nose recently playing ice hockey, so the Bruins can certainly relate." Global Post also reported Smith joked that "Kerry must be feeling like Mitt Romney after South Carolina.”
Kerry is a huge hockey fan and player. Huffington Post reports he regularly plays the Congressional Hockey Challenge, a charity event that raises money for the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club in Washington D.C. According to Daily Mail, he plays the forward and right wing positions.
While Kerry showed off his shiners, President Obama saluted the Boston Bruins for the 2011 Stanley Cup championship. During the ceremony, Obama said: "The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics, now the Patriots. Enough already, Boston. What's going on, huh?" Obama also commended the team work of The Bruins: "Together, these players proved that teamwork is everything. It can overcome injuries, it can overcome long odds.".
