Local officials in eastern Indonesia say a crocodile swallowed a 10-year-old girl while she frolicked in a river. The case is the second on that spot in the last two months.
AFP reports that Viktor Mado Waton, a district head in East Nusa Tenggara province, said the incident occurred on Thursday. According to the district official, the girl was swimming in the Wailolong river when a giant saltwater crocodile snapped her up in a moment and disappeared into the water.
According to Waton, the girl's father and her teenage brother were hunting turtles in the river. Ria Novosti reports that Mado Waton, said: “Juraida was seized when she was in about a half-meter of water at the river’s mouth...Her father and brother could only watch helplessly."
Rescuers who rushed to the scene found no traces of the girl's body. Ria Novosti reports they found only Juraida's dress and hair ribbon. Mado waton, according to AFP, said: "They only found the girl's clothes three hours after the incident, some 200 meters (650 feet) away from the attack site."
This is not the first time a person is eaten by a crocodile in the Wailolong river. In December, a 12-year-old boy was eaten by a crocodile while he played with his friends. Huffington Post reports that people living in the area have also reported loss of livestock.
People have been warned to stay away from the river. Indonesian authorities are working to shut the area off to prevent further incidents.
