Hvar - Croatia's only Master Chef Zdravko Kalabric arrives back on Hvar to continue training a young Dalmatian team for the culinary Olympics.
The island of Hvar's growing reputation as a gastronomic destination has been boosted by the arrival of Croatia's only Master Chef, Zdravko Kalabric, who arrived on the island on January 11, 2012, to continue his training of a young Dalmatian team of chefs for the culinary Olympics, to be held in Erfurt, Germany in October.
Kalabric, staying and working at the four-star Hotel Riva, voted among Europe's Best 100 Small Hotels in 2011 by Sunday Times readers, is on his second training visit to the island, and is working Zlatko Marinovic from leading Split restaurant Nostromo, to prepare the team for the international competition, which includes four Hvar chefs - two from the main Suncani Hvar hotel group, and Hrvoje Tomicic from Kod Kapetana restaurant and Igor Obradovic from Djordjotov Vrtal restaurant, both in Hvar Town (see video below for a report on Kalabric's first visit, including an interview with this correspondent).
The involvement of Kalabric is a major boost for the young Dalmatian team, and he brings the highest culinary pedigree and experience. Kalabric enjoyed a highly successful 38-year career in Canada, including stints at the Ritz Carlton Montreal and Chateau Champlain, and he was also a member of the Canadian national team in the Culinary Olympics in Germany.
The Culinary Olympics are held every four years in Erfurt, as chefs from all over the world pit their cooking skills against the best in the world, and Kalabric will be making regular visits to Hvar to mentor and prepare the Dalmatian team for this year's event.
The culinary focus of the island, named as Lonely Planet's number 5 destination for 2012, will shortly be moving to Belgrade, with several restaurants from Croatia's premier island hosting the seventh Days of Hvar Cuisine festival at leading Serbian restaurant Saran in Belgrade. The event, organised by Kod Kapetana owner Jurica Tomicic, reunites the island's many Serbian clients with Hvar cuisine in the middle of a Serbian winter.
