article imageOp-Ed: Charles Barkley slams Tebow, calling him a national nightmare

By Nancy Houser     Jan 12, 2012 in Sports
Denver - Basketball announcer, Charles Barkley, is not impressed with Tim Tebow. No sir. Even if Tebow did lead the Broncos to victory; or has a record of 23 rushing touchdowns, the highest for any position in the entire SEC history.
Barkley has a problem with the young 20-year-old Bronco quarterback, son of evangelical missionaries. In fact, Barkley has criticized him several times in public. On RantsSports, Barkley states, "They want to make it seem like, oh, the world is aligned correct. I'm like...he does play quarterback. He is supposed to play well."
Yes, well...uh, Barkley, football players are supposed to play well, but few play like Tebow has been doing. About 43% of Tebow fans saying think divine intervention plays some role in the success of Denver Broncos quarterback.Tim Tebow would – and does – credit God for all he accomplishes on the football field, but he does not pray to win.
In the December 11, 2011 game, CS Monitor says as he was bowing on knees on the field, he was heard praying before the game,
"Lord put a wall of protection around me and my teammates today, and we go out there and we can honor you with everything we do and say. I love you in Jesus' name."
During the fourth quarter of the same game, he prayed,
"Dear Jesus, I need you. Please come through for me. No matter what happens, win or lose, give me the strength to honor you."
However, his prayers vary, as when he was asked by Broncos Head Coach John Fox to speak to his team-mates. He quoted Proverbs 27:17, which states: "Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." Bronco players have even admitted, when Tebow is on the field, they play harder.
ESPN's Adam Scheftner calls Tebow "history in the making." He refers to Tim Tebow's six starts in 2011 as not only historic but captivating...calling each game "a phenomenon."

Tebow has given the Broncos something to cheer about when he became their starting quarterback, even though it has not been Charles Barkley himself who was doing the cheering. But looking deeper into Barkley's sarcastic statements about Tebow shows that Barkley is actually attacking the media more than the quarterback. He seems to focus his dislike on the ridiculous attention Tim Tebow is getting.
"He seems like a nice kid but these ups and downs are so different. The jury is still out on Tebow. Just because he had a great game and made four or five great throws yesterday doesn't mean he's gonna be a great starting quarterback in the NFL."
Bad as Barkley dislikes Tim Tebow and all the media around him, he even hates ESPN's commentator, Skip Bayless, even more. According to USA Today, while Barkley was on the Dan Patrick Show, he let the whole world the most graphic of much he really, really hated Bayless.
"I want to tell you the best thing you ever did. You know, because I hate Skip Bayless more than any person in the world. Thank you for giving me an alternative, so I don't have to watch Skip Bayless in the morning. I will always be indebted to you, so I don't have to watch that a------ Skip Bayless."
However, things change in Tebone Mania. At one time, Stephen A. Smith knocked Tebow as much as Barkley does now. But the more games Tim Tebow wins, the more Smith decides he isn't so bad. In fact, "Stephen A. Smith challenges Skip Bayless for not picking the Broncos to beat the Steelers," accusing Skip Bayless of hedging bets on Tebow.
