A 3-year-old girl visiting the lion's den at the Wellington Zoo in New Zealand is making headlines after she was caught on video facing off against an angry lion through a pane of safety glass.
The video shows a young Sofia Walker pressing her little face and hands against the thick glass of the enclosure inches away from the eight-year-old lion named Malik.
Malik, who just eaten, refused to move out of sight of the visitors, eventually lashing out with his giant paws at the glass and the little girl on the other side of it, according to the Daily Mail.
The little girl held her ground despite the annoyed lion's attempt to pounce on her from behind the safety glass. Sofia seemed surprised by the lion's attack but quickly showed Malik that she was not intimidated by his massive size, power and aggressiveness.
She can be heard on the video asking her parents, "What's he telling me?" A woman responded to the girl's question by saying, "I think he's telling you to move away, Sofia. He wants to eat his food."
The New Zealand Herald reported the girl was in no danger from the lion. Malik was held back by a safety glass that was 33 millimeters thick, and "couldn't be broken by a sledgehammer," said Paul Hatton, the zoo's team leader of carnivores and primates.
The video was made by the Sofia's father, Julian Walker, and uploaded to YouTube. It was picked up by the national news in New Zealand and in the United States where its been seen by millions of viewers.
Walker said his daughter was not fazed by the incident. "She's always had this quiet confidence with animals, but she's certainly more confident with a lion than I would be, that's for sure."
Sofia father told the New Zealand Herald that "despite his young daughter's calm reaction to the lion she doesn't have any aspirations to become a zoo-keeper at this stage" in her life. "She'd much rather be a fairy."
