article imageBig rise in movie attendance in France

By Tim Sandle     Jan 4, 2012 in Entertainment
Paris - The highest cinema attendance in 45 years was achieved in France in 2011, in contrast to the decline in ticket sales seen in most other countries. Last year French cinemas sold over 215 million movie theatre tickets.
The Hollywood Reporter heralds a significant rise in cinema attendance in France. The number people buying tickets increased by 4.2% in 2011 over the 2010 figure, with 215.6 million tickets sold. This was above the average of 191 million over the past ten years.
A considerable proportion of the increase in people attending the movies in France came from French-made or produced films. French films accounted for forty per-cent of the takings with 89.6 million in ticket sales. Of these, the most successful film was the “Intouchable” ("Untouchable"). The film was number one between November 2 and December 18, according to Box office Mojo. Another French film which did well was “Polisse”.
The second and third highest grossing films in France during 2011 were "Rien a declarer" (Nothing to Declare) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2". These were then followed by: The Adventures of Tintin and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (3D).
Globally, the final Harry Potter film was the most watched film.
The success of the French movie market stands in contrast to that of the USA, where receipts were down 4.5 per-cent in 2011 compared with the previous year. CBS News notes that this means that receipts are $500 million less. This is partly blamed on some sluggish performances from the movies released over the Christmas period (which was earlier reported by the Digital Journal).
Takings were also down in Canada, where 6 News noted a four per-cent decrease in movie attendance.
With Forbes predicting that box office receipts will continue to slump in 2012, may be the approach in France of promoting its own films at the same level as a Hollywood block buster is the best approach in order to get more people through the door.
