Toronto - He was the youngest son. He was a father to a 5-year-old girl. He was engaged to be married. He was the second person to be killed in Toronto in 2012.
Mike Pimentel's family spoke today to media pleading for someone to come forward about their loved ones death.
In the early hours of New Years Day Mike Pimentel, 24, was making his way to a party in Liberty Village with a group of friends including his fiance Jennifer Defraga. The group had just left another party at the Liberty Grand, a nightclub at the Exhibition.
On the way to the party Mike stopped to wish other Toronto citizens a Happy New Year while his friends went on ahead. No one could imagine that it would be the last time they would see their friend, described by his family as 'so funny, always cracking a joke and always on the go.'
Someone ended young Mike's life on Liberty Street and Hanna Street with a sharp blade. The young man was stabbed multiple times. Mike fought hard to survive, despite having severe blood loss he was revived once at St. Michael's Hospital. Sadly his body could not endure the trauma it had suffered. He died Sunday morning.
Detective Sgt. Wayne Banks said during a media conference this afternoon that the police are now trying to establish what happened prior to the attack that ended Mike's life. At this time they are reviewing and obtaining surveillance camera footage from along the route Mike took.
His heartbroken mother, Gloria Luz, said firmly that the person responsible for her son's death should be in jail. "He was a great son and didn't deserve this," she said in Portuguese.
Fiance Jennifer Defraga said that nothing had taken place earlier at the Liberty Grand.
Someone had to have seen something. There were 100s walking along the route when the attack took place. Police are asking that if you have any information, no matter how small it may appear, to call them. A family is grieving. They need justice for Mike.
