Four people have been found dead after a New Year's Day shooting at a house in Horden, near Peterlee, County Durham late on Sunday. The multiple killing rounds off a brutally active festive period for murder squad detectives across Britain.
The house in Greenside Avenue was the scene where police found the body of a 42-year old man and three women. Three other people in the house managed to escape. One of the women, a 19-year old, escaped through a bedroom window in the semi-detached house. The BBC reports, that a 40-year-old man, named locally as Michael Atherton, was licensed to own six firearms. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
The news comes as the nation are still feeling the effects of the senseless murder of Indian student, Anuj Bidve, shot at close range in Salford, Greater Manchester on Boxing Day. Police had described the killing as a "hate crime". In court, Kiaran Stapleton, 20, of Salford, who described himself as, "Psycho. Psycho Stapleton", has been remanded in custody charged with murder.
There was also a brutal murder in London's Oxford Street on the same day. Seydou Diarrassouba, only 18, was stabbed through the heart in the Foot Locker store in the capital's busiest street on the busiest shopping day of the year as horrified shoppers looked on.
A teenage couple were arrested in Luton after the death of a 42-year old man at a New Year’s Eve party in Luton. Detectives are also investigating a murder at a New Year party in Sheffield. They named the victim as 27-year-old Joshua Carl Green - who was stabbed to death. Also Norfolk Police were called to Mardle Road, Toft Monks, at about 3.15am on 1 January to reports of a disturbance outside the White Lion public house. A 23-year-old man was taken the James Paget University Hospital where he later died. An off-duty police officer was one of two men arrested.
Aaron McKoy was shot dead in Clerkenwell, central London, following a disturbance at the Clerkenwell House Wine Bar at around 4am on New Year's Day.
On Monday morning (January 2), a woman has been found dead after she was abducted from an address in Hackney, east London where two other woman, a 22-year old and a 24-year old, had been stabbed.
In Essex, a 29-year old man is thought to have been attacked on New Year's Eve, in a car park behind Trimley Close in Clacton-on-Sea. He died later in hospital from head injuries.
In Falkirk, Scotland a 43-year old man who was attacked in a car park on December 23 died on Christmas Day in hospital. A 42-year-old man will appear in court later this week in connection with the incident, which happened at 10.30pm.
In Camperdown, north Tyneside, 19-year old teenager Rikki James Todd died after he was involved in a fight on Christmas Eve outside the Halfway House pub in Station Road. The family of a man stabbed to death while attending a Christmas party at a Rochdale nightclub have paid tribute to him after he was stabbed in the back on Christmas Eve. John Lee Barrett, 31, from Rochdale was a convicted drug dealer who had served part of a six-year sentence for his role in running a cocaine-packaging factory in Manchester.
On Christmas Day the body of a 23-year old mother of three, Ruby Love was found floating in the Grand Union Canal, at Southall, West London. She had been hit on the head and strangled before being thrown in the canal. Manzar Juma, 27, understood to be Ruby’s boyfriend for the past five years, has been charged with her murder. Meanwhile in Nottingham a man has appeared in court charged with murdering his wife on Christmas Day. Stephen Woodward, 56, of Bilborough, was arrested after Gillian Woodward, also 56, was found dead at their home with a stab wound in Bilborough, Nottingham.
In Littlehampton on Christmas Day, a Lithuanian man was charged with stabbing his brother to death at a Christmas party. Vaides Juras, of Beach Road, Littlehampton, is charged with murdering Bronius Juras, 38, of Bayford Road, Littlehampton.
On Boxing Day in Borehamwood, a young woman who was killed while babysitting her three-year-old nephew and four-year-old niece was found dead by her mother. Police arrested a 26-year-old man in Islington, North London and an 18-year old. Chatherine Wynter, 19, knew both the arrested men. Police believe the youngsters may have witnessed the murder and they are being questioned by specially trained officers. Also on Boxing Day 70-year old Harry Tindall died from a single stab wound in a Nottingham street. Jeffrey Burton, 60, from Rainworth, appeared before magistrates in Mansfield accused of his murder.
On December 27, a woman was found dead after a disturbance at a house in Merseyside. Gaynor McGlyn, 42, from Anfield died from stab wounds to the stomach. James Morgan, 33, of no fixed abode, has been charged with her murder.
A man who died at a recreation ground following an altercation involving 20 men, was named as Jason Scott Cooke, 23. He had also been stabbed on December 27 and police have arrested seven men in connection with the death, five of them on suspicion of murder.
A brutal murder on December 29 in Wolverhampton ended the life of an unnamed 36-year old woman from Iran. She had been stabbed 18 times and her murder may have been witnessed by a 12-year old boy who was in the flat (apartment) at the time. A man in his thirties was also injured in the same incident.
