The Argentinian motorcyclist Jorge Martínez Boero was killed during the first stage of the Dakar Rally 2012. He died as a consequence of injuries he suffered in a fall today Jan 1.
The accident happened during the first time trial between Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa de la Pampa in the province of Buenos Aires. The 38-year-old was immediately transferred to a hospital by helicopter but doctors were unable to revive him. First reports suggest he suffered serious chest injuries.
A report Jan 1 on, said that he had been reached and treatment started within five minutes of his accident. The report also says that his last message on Twitter was "Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you for all the messages. I am going to give everything. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger".
This was Martínez Boreo's second attempt at the Dakar Rally. He is the second person to die since the rally was transferred to South America in 2009. This is the thirty third running of the Dakar Rally known as an extremely tough test of drivers and riders. It is an off-road endurance test open to a variety of vehicles such as cars, bikes and trucks .The final three stages will move from Argentina to Peru with the finish line and awards ceremony taking place in Lima, the capital of Peru.
