The mixture of sports and art is not uncommon but this story is nonetheless a little different: a noted Canadian novelist has been honored in his country - by the country's baseball community.
Canada's Hall of Fame for baseball announced in late December 2011 that the author W.P. Kinsella has been awarded the 2011 Jack Graney Award. Since 1987 the award has been given annually to a person who, as a press release on their website says, makes a "significant contribution to the game of baseball in Canada through a life’s work or for a singular outstanding achievement."
Shoeless Joe Jackson Goes to Iowa
Kinsella wrote the novel 'Shoeless Joe' about an Iowa farmer who risks everything to build a ball diamond in his corn field believing (deceased) former major league player Shoeless Joe Jackson would come to play on it. A magical story about baseball and the relationship between a father and son it was made into the 1989 film 'Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta and, in his final movie appearance, Burt Lancaster.
“I wrote it 30 years ago, and the fact that people are still discovering it makes me proud. It looks like it will stand the test of time,” Kinsella told the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
The book and film brought a great deal of attention to baseball, with non-fans becoming more interested in the game after reading or seeing the story, and for Canadian baseball, struggling for press in a country where hockey is king, it did not hurt that Kinsella was Canadian.
W.P. Kinsella: Novelist is Big Baseball Fan
Kinsella, 76, played baseball as a child in Edmonton, Alberta, and he continues to be involved in supporting baseball for kids; he's also a big Toronto Blue Jays fan. He's written short stories and 2 dozen novels, with 'Shoeless Joe' his most successful. The award has been given to sports writers and broadcasters but this is the first time a fiction writer has been so honored.
There will be a ceremony to celebrate the award at an as yet undetermined date in 2012.
