article imageUpdate: Verizon Wireless to scrap $2 fee amid 'customer feedback'

Basking Ridge - Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it will not go through with its planned $2 fee for customers who make payments that are made directly online or over the phone. It revised its plans after it received customer feedback.
Digital Journal reported on Thursday that Verizon Wireless was planning on imposing a $2 fee for users who make bill payments over the phone or online. It was scheduled to begin on Jan. 15, 2012 in order to help cover the costs and continue the feature. The company has now changed its mind.
According to a news release from Verizon Wireless, the company verified that it will not be implementing the convenience fee. After receiving feedback from its customers, the corporation decided to scrap it.
“At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time,” said president and CEO of Verizon Wireless, Dan Mead.
Many customers established online petitions and many went as far as proposing a boycott of all Verizon products.
However, Verizon is still encouraging its customers to use the other bill payment options, such as Electronic check online or telephone, AutoPay, online bill payment through the customer’s bank or kiosk payments.
This comes as Bloomberg News reported that the Federal Communications Commission planned to probe the convenience fee. “On behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter,” said FCC spokesperson Neil Grace.”
After the news broke, many customers went to Twitter to voice their frustrations, and later its congratulations to Verizon consumers.
@maggie_reardon: “I've never understood why companies force customers to pay a fee to pay their bill: VZ charges $2 for online payments.”
@MiaFarrow: “WOW!! People power!!”
@consumerist: “Verizon Wireless Adds $2 'Convenience' Fee To Make Your Life More Inconvenient.”
