article imageOp-Ed: US push towards war with Iran could lead to World War III in 2012

By Katerina Nikolas     Dec 30, 2011 in World
It is appearing increasingly inevitable that the U.S. will set the stage to broker war against Iran in 2012. Global recession provides the perfect timing for what could escalate into World War III. The 1 % will be safe as the 99% become disposable fodder.
In Aug. 2010 Global Research wrote "The US and its allies are 'beating the drums of war' at the height of a Worldwide economic depression." It was of course referring to a Pentagon planned war over future oil interests and the wealth spoils that ensue from arms and rebuilding contracts. The target Iran.
Whatever excuse is fabricated for the current escalation of sanctions and warnings to Iran, the outcome appears inevitably to be war instigated by the U.S. and supported by her allies. The surprise is that Iran was not the immediate target following 9/11, rather than the regime of Saddam Hussein, which the U.S. had supported during the Iran-Iraq war. The U.S. had of course armed Saddam with chemical weapons and turned a blind eye when he turned them on "Iranian soldiers and Iraq’s Kurdish minority." (Counter Punch)
Naturally the silence from the U.S. and her key allies was palpable this year when the brutal al-Khalifa regime in Bahrain violently suppressed protests. The double standards employed over Bahrain and Libya demonstrated the total lack of concern for the lives of Libyan civilians which NATO was supposedly protecting, pointing instead to the selfish motive of regime change for U.S. and European strategic interests. It was increasingly obvious that Bahrain could massacre its whole Shia population with the assistance of Saudi security forces, and the world would hardly blink: but then again Bahrain remained the home of the U.S. Fifth Fleet which will be of vital importance in future military action against Iran.
Wikileaks released 2008 U.S. government cables which revealed Saudi Arabia's “frequent exhortations to the US to attack Iran.” Other GCC member states share Saudi's fears of Iran, not just because of their worries over Iran's nuclear capabilities but over their fear of a Shia uprising that will destabilize their own controlled Sunni populations. Is it any surprise when Libyan rebels, previously affiliated with al-Qaeda, are now operating in Syria with the financial backing of Qatar.
Those who have long predicted that one of the largest global threats will emanate from Iran have long expected that it will be the catalyst for a major war. Left to its own devices Iran could continue to be vocal without action, knowing that action initiated without provocation would be suicidal. Let us hope that 2012 is not the year that the world descends into the dark chaos which would ensue and escalate into a damming World War III and that the globalist meddlers instead concentrate on interests nearer to home.
