A gamer proposed to his girlfriend in Google+ via the MMORPG game "Crime City". But other people think it's just a company's marketing publicity stunt.
The game company Funzio described the story in a post on Mashable: "A player named Mihai (last name unknown) approached Funzio with the idea of using his crime-boss character to propose to his significant other Miruna, who also played the game. Crime City, being a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), has in-game objects players can purchase, and the Funzio team hooked up our hero with a virtual engagement ring."
It was said that the plan was created on Christmas Day. Mihai purchased the ring and the moment Miruna logged into the game, she saw the engagement ring in her inventory. Mihai went down to his virtual knee and then Miruna said "Yes".
The report was said to be the first marriage proposal on the search engine's social network. Peter Pachal described the story in Mashable as something like a publicity grab saying, "It's a clever one. We’ve reached out to the (game) company for more details, and Funzio is working on connecting us with the happy couple. The company did say that Mihai and Miruna are their real names.
The online proposal through Crime City is not the first in terms of "geek proposals" using the Internet. In January 2011, Greg Hill proposed via Groupon to his girlfriend Dana Burck. The arrangement was done with the help of the website where he was able to send a customized deal email. The link directed Burck into Hill's proposal page, where the girl read and clicked "Buy". She received a Groupon congratulatory message that tells her that "she's unofficially obliged to marry him."
In November, a South Carolina journalist Nick McCormac proposed to his girlfriend Whitney Bragg using his political column in The Item. Just recently, Timothy Tiah Ewe Tiam made headlines with his "Internet Meme" proposal to Audrey Ooi Feng Ling in Malaysia.
Funzio has no word yet regarding the wedding date and honeymoon of Mihai and Miruna in the game or in the real world. So far, Google has not yet issued any statement with regards to the Crime City marriage proposal.
