article imageOp-Ed: Nigerian defender Festus Baise scores the best own goal ever

By Christopher Bates     Dec 19, 2011 in Sports
Forget Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Meet Nigerian defender Festus Baise, who recently found the back of the net in similar fashion to the world's biggest names. Unfortunately for Baise, it was the wrong goal. D'oh!
I can almost guarantee that you won't see many own goals better than this one, which was scored in the Hong Kong first division game between Sun Hei SC and Citizen AA on Friday.
As Sun Hei's Jack Sealy went to cross the ball in, the 31-year-old instinctively "cleared" it away with a reverse scorpion kick – similar to the save Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita made against England in 1995. Somehow, and I'm still not entirely sure how, the ball ended up in the back of his own net.
Baise's 79th-minute own goal gave Sun Hei something of a consolation, although they did manage to find another before the game was out, as it finished 3-2.
