Munich - The beautiful game often brings us many surprises; however, I can safely say that I’ve never seen anything like this. In a Bundesliga game which took place on Friday night, Bayern Munich defender Daniel van Buyten struck the ball so hard that it burst.
The 33-year-old Belgian defender – who had a brief loan spell with current English Premier League leaders Manchester City back in 2004 – is renowned for his vicious ball-striking ability.
After Munich were awarded an early free-kick at the Allianz Arena – the venue for next year’s UEFA Champions League final – van Buyten stepped up to do, or at least attempt the honors.
Sascha Riether of 1. FC Köln fearlessly threw himself in front of the Belgian’s strike, before the ball's inner lining decided to make an appearance, having snuck out of a hole in the outer leather.
Play quickly resumed after Munich’s Arjen Robben smashed the ball into the crowd.
Munich weren’t the subject of any bad luck though, as they went on to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory, despite having Franck Ribery sent off in the 33rd minute.
