article imageMatt Damon & Steven Soderbergh spread the secrets of 'Contagion' Special

By Earl Dittman     Dec 12, 2011 in Entertainment
In one of the most shocking, realistic viral epidemic films ever made, director Steven Soderbergh assembled an incredible cast, including Matt Damon, to bring his lethal story to screen. The duo discuss their feelings towards the horrifying 'Contagion.'
Be warned. Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t touch anyone. Beware the air around you, because a deadly virus is mutating its way. Featuring an ensemble cast of Academy Award winners and nominees, the critically acclaimed thriller Contagion tells the story of the infectious paranoia and fear that accompany the spread of a lethal virus. Directed by Steven Soderbergh from an original screenplay by Scott Z. Burns, Contagion (coming soon to Blu-Ray and DVD) brings together a stellar international ensemble cast featuring Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), Oscar winner Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, the Bourne films), Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne (What's Love Got to Do With It) Academy Award nominee Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), and Oscar winner Kate Winslet (The Reader).
"It's scary because it is something that could really happen to us," Matt Damon said earlier this summer, while doing interviews with director Soderbergh in New York City. "The chances of an epidemic happening tomorrow aren't that far-fetched. In a lot of ways, this movie is sending out an important warning we all need to pay attention to."

In Contagion, an international traveler reaches into the snack bowl at an airport bar before passing her credit card to a waiter. A business meeting begins with a round of handshakes. A man coughs on a crowded bus... One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted. When Beth Emhoff (Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband (Damon) they have no idea why. Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms: hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hemorrhage... and ultimately, death. The numbers quickly multiply as the contagion sweeps across all borders, fueled by the countless human interactions that make up the course of an average day. A global pandemic explodes. As the death toll escalates and people struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones in a society breaking down, one activist blogger (Law) claims the public isn't getting the truth about what's really going on, and sets off an epidemic of paranoia and fear as infectious as the virus itself.
"I had such an incredible cast to work with on this movie," filmmaker Soderbergh admits. "They took a great story and made it even more believable with their incredible, realistic performances. They bring real truth to what could one day be a true story."

So you can tend to be overprotective?
Matt: "Oh yeah, I think there is a tendency to be a little overprotective. But I don’t want to be a helicopter parent."
Matt, would it be tough, for you, as a dad to have to deal with even the tiniest illnesses, much less the major medical crisis depicted in Contagion? Isn't it true your wife has a nickname for you after doing this movie?
Matt: "I think with kids, I’m probably more protective than I’ve ever been now that I have children. And yes, my wife’s nickname for me is Red Alert. I think I’m probably more protective after making this movie than I ever have been with the kids. I sometimes just check to see if the kids are breathing." (laughs)
Laurence Fishburne, one of your costars, said he was blown away with how smart the movie was and was honored to have been asked to be in the film.
Matt: "I had a similar reaction. I was getting ready to do something else. But Steven (Soderbergh) called and said 'I’ve got this thing I think you'll like. We really have to make it now because it’s timely.' It’s the best thing Scott has written. And so he sent it over with a note that said, Read this and then wash your hands.'" (laughs)
What was it like playing the role you played?
Matt: "I thought it was easy to relate to, he was on the page. Working with SS (Steven Soderbergh) is different. To give you an example of a day we’d go and shoot, we’d talk about what were going to do, shoot, go back to the hotel, go to the bar and in the backroom of the bar they would deliver the footage. We would sit there with our producer and assistant director and talk while SS put on headphones and opened up his laptop. At the end, he’d take his headphones off and show us what we shot that day. When you’re working that way, it’s like making a movie in your backyard with your friends. The body is out on the operating table and wide open. You talk about what else do we need. At one point, he even asked me 'Matt, do you have a earthquake prevention kit."

That's a bit of a strange question?
Matt: "It may be, but by doing Contagion. the film forced him to become a bit of a germ-a-phobe and a life-a-phobe. So after the North Ridge Quake, I put a flashlight by my bed for two weeks and then forgot about it. I wonder if those batteries are still good?"
Steven, didn't you have an interesting conversation with Scott Bakula?
Steven: "We had just finished The Informant! We were basking in the glow. There’s a scene where Scott Bakula coughs and sneezes, Then he gives his phone to Matt who goes on this rant of ‘Here it begins. Now my kid will get sick.’ (laughs) (Screenwriter) Scott Z. Burns also wanted to do a pandemic movie. But we would only do one that was rooted in reality. Everyone felt there was a place for an ultra realistic film about this subject, I wanted to do it as a horror movie where the virus scares you. I got a quick green light. It happened crazy fast considering what the business is now for adult dramas, That made me feel that we were onto something."
Didn't you and Steven spend many long night talking to real life scientists about viruses and pandemics?Matt: "Yeah, we did. All of the scientists that we spoke to said a major virus sweeping the globe is not a matter of if, but when. Then a few months into our research, H1N1 hit, which was pretty creepy."
Gwyneth Paltrow's gurney death and autopsy scenes are very shocking.
Steven: "Gwyneth is a trooper. We got into that room and had an actual medical examiner that does this sort of thing all the time right there. We asked her to walk us through the steps. When she got the part where ‘we peel the skin over the face,’ I turned and said, ‘OK, we have to find a flap of something that looks like pizza with a little sauce and wig hair in order to do this scene. It took about 40 minutes of Gwyneth on a table. She was stock still. Didn’t say a word. She had weird death contacts in. Before we shot, she asked the medical examiner where her mouth should be. She was told, ‘Your tongue will be a bit out with yellow fluid coming out. She knew this would be a weird, iconic image that will last forever – and she was right."

{Matt, didn't you have trouble the scene when you find out your wife Gwyneth is dead?
Matt: "At first, I said, ‘How do I do this scene? It’s five minutes into the movie. Who cares if she dies? The audience isn’t invested yet. I said to Steven, ‘Should I do.' "Steven just said, ‘Should you do, the slump?’ We talked to doctors who deliver death news and the told us that many men just slump a little and nothing registers when they hear this kind of news. They hear their wife is dead, slump a little and say, ‘OK, can I talk to her. It just doesn’t register."
You've said that you would do anything for Soderbergh after working with him in the Oceans franchise and on The Informant!Matt: "Working with Steven Soderbergh is just so different. Everyday, it's like he body was out on the operating table and wide open. The hocus pocus of filmmaking is taken out."
Steven, you like honesty when you work with your actors, don't you?
Steve: "I always want that honesty."
Matt, why are you sporting a bald head?
Matt: "I love it. I can see why guys rock bald hair. It’s great in the summer time and so easy to get out of the shower and go. I shaved it to do a movie with the director of District 9. I have shaved my head in the past when I did Brothers Grimm. I had a wig and it was just easier to get the wig on without having to glue my real hair down."

Steven, in addition with Michael Douglas in the lead role of the biopic of Liberace, what else do you have coming up to direct?
Steven" "I'll film The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with George Clooney. And, I will also do Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Jessica Biel and Demi Moore. I like to call it my Channing Tatum Male Stripper Movie."
What about reports that you will soon retire and pursue a career in art?
Steven: "The good news is we have the man who started these rumors. He has total recall when he’s drunk, which is really alarming."

Any other movies Steven?
"Do you tell me things hoping I won’t remember. All I can say is my next 18 months will be very busy. That’s about as far as I can see into the future. I'm just focused on now and test screenings for Contagion. It was fun during the previews for this film. I’d watch 400 people at the end of this film squirm as the credits rolled. I could see them realize they were in a small theater near a bunch of strangers – coughing, sneezing and touching everything around them. I could see the audience sit there and think, ‘How many people have touched this movie seats?’"
