Melbourne - One person was injured and people fled in panic in a suburb of Melbourne when a fuel tanker exploded at a petrol station. The tanker had been delivering fuel to the filling station when it went up in flames, the Australian broadcaster Channel 9 reported.
The Guardian reports that the tanker burst into flames seconds after the driver stepped out and was about to begin delivery of fuel to the station in Rowville. He suffered burns to his arms and leg and was taken to hospital. CCTV footage showed people fleeing as the blast spread flames. The incident, according to The Telegraph, occurred in the early hours of Sunday. A nearby nightclub had to evacuated. About 500 people were affected by the evacuation.
The fire spread with leaking fuel to the driveway of a hotel nearby and set two parked cars on fire.
BBC reports that the fire "apparently happened during an electrical storm."
Firefighters brought the fire under control after an hour. The Telegraph reported that the firefighters used foam on the fuel fire.
It is not certain what caused the explosion but an investigation is underway to determine its cause.
