article imageGreen Monday: FedEx expects today to be busiest shipping day ever

As a part of the busiest time of the year for retailers, shipping companies are also active. According to estimates, Memphis-based FedEx is anticipating to ship over 17 million packages today.
There's Black Friday, Cyber Monday, but did you know there's also a Green Monday? Coined by eBay in 2007 after online sales shot up on the second Monday of December, the day is also traditionally considered to be the day consumers do their last-minute holiday shopping and scurry to get their gifts shipped out on time.
Retailers prep for the day to be a lucrative one, with some even offering special Green Monday deals, and companies, such as FedEx, are bustling to get packages moved to their final destinations.
Digital Journal reported back in October that FedEx announced they had planned to hire 20,000 extra staff to handle the holiday season volume.
ABC News reported the history of upsurge in packages shipped by FedEx on Green Monday. In 2005, the company moved 9.8 million packages, 2008, 12 million. Today the company is expecting 17 million packages to be shipped.
FedEx employee Jennifer Cordeau told ABC, "online shopping is by far the biggest reason we're seeing so many packages. Also people like to ship their packages if they are traveling for the holidays."
Indiana's WISH Channel 8 reported the shipping giant is benefiting from this year's record-breaking Cyber Monday.
"From the shipping perspective, our volume goes through the roof” says Terry Werner, Senior Manager at FedEx Office in Castleton. “We’ll try not to have lines, but we still expect it to be really busy.”
If today plans out as anticipated, FedEx deliveries will rise 9 percent over last year.
Where does the United States Postal Service stand with all this action? While this time of year is expected to be a revenue booster for the struggling delivery service with the addition of mailed packages and billions of Christmas cards, it likely won't result in the type of cash inflow the agency needs in order to push itself back into the black.
