Blacksburg - According to local police, Ross Truett Ashley - a part-time student at Radford University - is thought to be the killer of Virginia Tech campus officer Deriek Crouse.
According to the BBC, police have managed to piece together Ashley's last movements, although they are still unsure of his motive.
Back on Wednesday, Ashley reportedly stole a Mercedes SUV from a real estate office in Radford, having threatened an employee with a handgun before demanding their keys.
The vehicle was later found at Virgina Tech after the attack on Thursday.
Police say the shooting of Crouse took place at 12:15 EST, while he was sitting in his car. Ashley, who was later found in a nearby car park with a gunshot wound, is believed to have fled on foot after the incident.
No link has been found between Ashley and Crouse - a 39-year-old father of five who had worked at Virginia Tech for four years.
On the same day as Crouse's death, the university appealed against a $55,000 (£35,200) fine imposed by the government for not reacting quickly enough to the 2007 massacre.
32 people were killed during the 2007 massacre, after Seung-Hui Cho, a 23-year-old South Korean student, went on a gun rampage before taking his own life.
