Los Angeles - A gunman opened fire on passing cars Friday morning on Vine Street near Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. Police were forced to shoot the gunman, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Associated Press reports that the gunman was seen walking up and down Vine Street shouting things like "kill me" and "I'm gonna die". He proceeded to shoot at passing cars.
Two people suffered injuries. One of the victims was taken to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.
When police arrived on the scene, the gunman was seen brandishing a knife along with the gun. Police opened fire on the man after he refused to comply with orders, fatally wounding him.
Oscar Herrera told CBS Los Angeles:
“He put the gun in his waist and he walked down there. And that’s when a policeman came this way, near the bank, and he saw him with the knife and the gun (and) he started shooting at him like maybe four or five times.”
Several people in the area initially thought that perhaps they were witnessing the making of a movie and that the whole incident was being staged, considering the fact that this was happening in the heart of Hollywood.
A sheet was draped over the gunman's body. He lay motionless at the scene for several hours while authorities conducted an investigation.
Police have not yet released the identity of the gunman, but it is believed that he may have wanted to die in a suicide by police.
