article imageOp-Ed: Petition launched to restore diplomatic ties with Iran

By Alexander Baron     Dec 7, 2011 in Politics
After the sacking of the British Embassy in Tehran, the British Government expelled all Iranian diplomats, and a petition was launched to stop the war so many vested interests want to see.
Today, another petition was launched.
As with the earlier petition, the new one was launched by James Thring of the Stop The War Coalition, and calls for the restoration of diplomatic ties with Iran. It can be found here. If you haven't signed it yet, answer this simple question, do you want to see another Cold War, yet another war in the Gulf, or perhaps even World War III?
Human rights are constantly being violated in Iran.
Did you know for instance that in the past two years, two police officers who were caught on film brutalising women were cleared of any impropriety? Or that last August, the police shot dead an unarmed man after surrounding his minicab? Bang, you're dead. And that so far the authorities have brought no charges against anyone?
Shocking, isn't it? How can any civilised society tolerate such behaviour? We'd never stand for this sort of thing in Britain. Well, guess what? We did: at a peaceful demonstration, in a police station, and in Tottenham.
To those people who say we must act against Iran now, the best response is clean out your own stables first.
