Boston - As NBA teams get set for a strike-shortened season, marketing ploys are surfacing and the Boston Celtics fired an early shot with a season-ticket commercial attempting to revive the glory days, at the expense of the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat.
The new I Am A Celtic 30-second spot, provided by YouTube, with background music meant to inspire, shows a series of “I Am” montages including “I Am Not Hollywood” and “I Am Not South Beach,” obvious digs at LA and Miami.
The Celtics are the most-storied team in NBA history, winners of 17 championships, followed close behind by the Lakers, with 16. The two teams have met a record 12 times in the Finals.
The NBA owners and players agreed to a new deal in late November, ending a 149-day labor stoppage. Training camps will start Dec. 9 and a new 66-game season is scheduled to start with a nationally televised tripleheader on Christmas Day.
Pre-season odds on winning the NBA Championship, according to BetVega, show the Celtics at 12/1, with the Lakers at 4/1 and the Heat, early favorites, at 2/1.
Last season, in a best-of-seven series, the Heat upended the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 4-1.
