article imageEd Helms goes Thai for 'The Hangover Part II' Special

By Earl Dittman     Dec 4, 2011 in Entertainment
The costar of The Hangover recalls his time in Thailand for the sequel The Hangover Part II (now on Blu-Ray & DVD), talks his about his indie smash Cedar Rapids, the current state of the weekly primetime hit The Office and if success has changed his life.
The second time around with the Wolfpack is even more outrageous than the first. A strip club, a finger, a drug lord, a tattoo parlor and a monkey are the keys to solving the mystery of the missing wedding guest at the latest bachelor party. With the memory of Doug's nearly disastrous bachelor party in Las Vegas still fresh -- or well-documented -- Stu, played by funnyman Ed Helms, is taking no chances. In The Hangover Part II (now on Blu-ray and DVD), The members of the Wolfpack -- Stu, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) -- travel to exotic Thailand for Stu's wedding. In director Todd Phillips's sequel to the 2009 box office hit The Hangover, Stu is determined not to risk his own wedding by repeating the destructive antics of Doug's party in Vegas. So, he has opted for a safe, subdued, pre-wedding trip brunch, with pancakes, coffee -- and NO alcohol. However, things don't always go as planned.
Two nights before the big day, at a fabulous resort in Thailand, Stu relents. One beer each, in a sealed bottles. What could go wrong? But a night of wild partying leaves the Wolfpack with no memory of the night before and no idea how to find the bride's missing brother. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can't even be imagined.
Ed Helms, a regular cast member of the primetime hit The Office and the star of this summer's indie comedy Cedar Rapids, took a break from his buddies in the Wolfpack to talk about filming in Thailand, if doing The Hangover movies has transformed him into a sex symbol, what it was like making love to Sigourney Weaver in Cedar Rapids, reveals how he got into comedy and his thoughts about the future of The Office now that Steve Carell has left the show.

Has Stu Price, you character from The Hangover movies, transformed you into a stud or a hunk?
"Oh sure, Clooney and Pitt should be shaking in their boots. I’m hot on their heels as an international sex symbol. God knows me running around with my little belly and tighty whities is sure to ignite the passion of the ladies around the world."
For The Hangover Part II, you teamed back up with actors Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha. But instead of going to Las Vegas, this time the characters of Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to Bangkok for Stu’s wedding. What was it like to be back with your pals from the "the Wolfpack?"
"We’ve been through so much together from the first Hangover. To jump back in with those guys was really fun, comfortable and exciting."
And what was spending two months filming in Bangkok shooting like?
"It was exhilarating, intense, overwhelming and ultimately just awesome. There were a lot of highs and lows, but that fit because it’s a very intense movie. Our experience making it was extremely intense. You’ll see it and feel it onscreen."

How would you best describe the plot of The Hangover sequel?
"Everything is heightened. But, of course, after doing the second Hangover, it feels like has become crazy, quite a ride, a lot of fun and mostly me working my ass off."
Earlier this summer, you starred in the hit comedy Cedar Rapids. In it, you play Tim, a normal, everyday insurance agent who lets loose at an out-out-town convention in Cedar Rapids. You get mixed up with a party/hearty agent played by John C. Reilly and Anne Heche, who portrays a married woman looking for some action. How would you best describe Cedar Rapids to film lovers?
"Going to the big city is so simple and meaningful. There is something poignant about it. On the surface, it’s a broad fish out of water, but there’s a lot of heartbreak, desperation and fear."
In Cedar Rapids, what was your love scene with Sigourney Weaver hovering over you like?
"It was my first love scene ever in a movie and I was freaking out. When Sigourney sat on top of me, my mind began to race. All I could think of was, ‘Ok you’re virtually naked, simulating love making – awkward ---and wow there are a lot of lights on around us. I felt a bit like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, from an acting standpoint."
So, do you finally make insurance agents cool and hip?
"I think that any job can be cool when you look closely. It’s also about seeing the peaks and valleys. Don’t be mean to your insurance agent because you don’t know the difficulties involved in their job. It’s easy to hate something superficially, but when you become familiar with anyone’s real job, you have to soften a little bit."

I loved the Ann Arbor, Michigan hotel where you filmed Cedar Rapids. You don't see many hotels with an indoor pool in the middle of the downstairs lounging area anymore.
"You're right. It’s not easy to find one of those atriums with a pool but it was important to the story because there’s a key scene in the water and you need other hotel visitors to see what’s happening. Again, it’s a scene where I’m in my underwear, but this time in a cold hotel pool. It’s hard work getting in and out of a pool for two days straight. The fact that I’m also in another love scene just makes it ridiculous."
How did an Atlanta-born boy get involved in comedy?
"I was always really obsessed with comedy, particularly Saturday Night Live. I went off to college and tried to figure out what I might be good at, and I always kept coming back to comedy."
How did you initially feel when Steve Carell announced he was leaving The Office?
"I said good riddance. The guy has been dragging us down for seven years now." (laughs)
Obviously, you are joking.
"Of course. We all felt his departure would be utterly heartbreaking and not just because of what he brought to the show comically, but because he’s intrinsically a good man who had been our Dad on the set. Once Steve left there was a feeling like we’re a little rudderless."
Now that the new season has started, have all those feelings have changed?
"Absolutely they've changed. We just took a positive attitude and so far, it's turned out great. I mean, here is a show that’s seven years into its maturity and it gets to completely reinvent itself. That’s a rare opportunity. Everyone got fired up to reinvent the show and see what new crazy shenanigans we could come up with for the cast."

Could Steve Carell ever be replaced?
"I’m not even sure if it should be thought as a clean replacement situation. It's more a reinvention of The Office in so many ways."
With The Hangover Part II, Cedar Rapids and your regular gig on The Office, is success making your life easier?
"It’s always a struggle. What’s funny is you always think it’s just about to become easier. As a struggling stand up comedian, I thought if I just got on a TV show then life would be easy. Then the show only lasts a year and you’re back to where you started. It’s a good thing, though. You need to stay hungry in life. You need to keep fighting for the good projects. Nothing falls into your lap, which is a good thing. And you have to take risks."

Like some of the risqué comedy performed in The Hangover Part II?
"Let me tell you, some of the gags and jokes we perform have had guys laughing until they cried. It’s a testament to (director) Todd Phillips' genius that he can sell such a crude jokes as high art...It is art, isn't it?"
