London - Iranian diplomats have until 2 p.m. (GMT) to leave the UK after being ordered out of the country by the Foreign Secretary on Wednesday.
In response to the attack on the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday (November 29), the UK's Foreign Secretary William Hague gave a speech to the House of Commons in which he informed the House and the country that after recalling British Embassy staff from Iran he was now giving Iranian diplomats at the Iranian Embassy in London 48 hours to leave the United Kingdom.
The deadline for Iranian diplomats to leave the United Kingdom is 2 p.m. (GMT) today.
In his strongly worded speech on Wednesday he said;
We have now closed the British Embassy in Tehran. We have decided to evacuate all our staff and as of the last few minutes all our UK-based staff have now left Iran.
But clearly that cannot be the end of the matter.
The Iranian Chargé in London is being informed now that we require the immediate closure of the Iranian Embassy in London and that all Iranian diplomatic staff must leave the United Kingdom within the next 48 hours.
If any country makes it impossible for us to operate on their soil they cannot expect to have a functioning Embassy here.
He also made it clear that this was not the end of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Iran.
Iran has faced mounting pressure in the past few days from various countries to be more forthcoming about their nuclear development programme.
Last night further sanctions were placed on the Iranian regime by EU Foreign Ministers and the US Senate but a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels last night made the decision not to impose an embargo on Iranian oil.
