article imageSaudi: Hospital finds 7 nails in Sri Lankan maid's body

By Katerina Nikolas     Nov 28, 2011 in World
Riyad - In Saudi Arabia, a young Sri Lankan housemaid was admitted to hospital on Saturday in pain. Doctors found seven nails embedded in her body, but the maid does not know how they got there. She drank a sedative from her employer and then recalled nothing.
A Sri Lankan woman working as a maid in Saudi Arabia has had nails inserted into her body in an incident all too reminiscent of last year's case where a Sri Lankan maid accused her Saudi employers of inserting nails into her body.
Doctors at Damman Central Hospital found seven nails inside the body of Balsubramaniam Shashikala, 22, when she was admitted complaining of pain on Saturday.
Shashikala arrived in Saudi on Aug. 22 and according to Arab News has no recollection of how the nails materialized in her body. The maid said she was given a sedative by her employer's wife, and recalled nothing after that, but has said she was not mistreated by her employers. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh has demanded a full inquiry.
Sri Lankan authorties launched a full investigation in August 2010 following claims from another housemaid that had returned from Saudi and accused her employers, a Saudi couple, of inserting 24 nails in her body. LP Ariyawathie, 49, told doctors in Sri Lanka that her employer had hammered the nails into her body. She was traumatized by the torturous abuse she had received in Saudi.
However Alarabiya reported that the Saudi government strongly denied the allegations of Ariyawathie, accusing Sri Lankan "labor firms of blackmailing the Saudi government in order to revoke the new regulations and salary ceilings applied to foreign workers."
Thousands of overseas maids working in Saudi have complained of mistreatment in the form of sexual abuse; unpaid wages; violence; being unable to leave the employer's home; and other forms of abuse. Migrants Rights documents many such cases.
