article imageBBC documentary 'Prince: A Purple Reign'

Minneapolis - Prince is one of the enigmas of contemporary music; this documentary begins with his early recording career and traces his development as an artist.
For those who can receive this documentary, it is currently on BBC iplayer, but watch out for it on YouTube.
Is it an exaggeration to describe Prince as a modern day Mozart?
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born January 27, 1756, and by December 1765 had already written his 4th symphony and much other music besides.
At seventeen, multi-instrumentalist Prince was already laying down all the tracks for his compositions, and throughout his career he has maintained an extraordinary output, including writing for and giving away songs to other artists, producing them, and making four films between 1984 and 1990, most notably Purple Rain.
This is not a warts and all documentary because it is difficult to see how he has ever found time for recreation, his idea of partying is putting on a private or semi-private show after a gig.
If we don't mention Chuck Berry, who was doing this sort of thing before either of them was born, Prince has been rightly identified along with Michael Jackson as the first crossover artist. At the same time Edward Van Halen was playing lead guitar on Jackson's Beat It, Prince was putting out Little Red Corvette.
This hour long documentary is not a hagiography, but it does draw a lot on friends and collaborators, though not the ultra-reclusive man himself. It is doubtful if he ever had time to make enemies, although like many artists he has come into conflict with his recording company, but is the only one to brand his face with the word slave on account!
Currently, the man from SongFacts has 28 Prince recordings in his database, in addition to others like Manic Monday, that he gave to other artists.
