David Beckham is traveling to the Philippines with his co-stars at L.A. Galaxy to play with Philippine Azkals during the Major League Soccer (MLS) champion's tour of Asian countries.
L.A. Galaxy is fresh from its hard fought victory over Houston Dynamo, its first in six years.
According to Philippine Football Federation President Mariano Araneta, the visit by Beckham and the entire L.A. Galaxy team will contribute immensely to the popularity of football in the country. The Philippine's most popular sports is basketball.
“The timing is great. The Philippine Azkals are keeping football’s popularity up since they beat Vietnam 2-0, last year in the Suzuki Cup. Beckham’s visit would further popularize football among Filipinos,” Araneta said.
The exhibition game will take place at the Rizal Memorial Football Field on Dec. 3. Beckham and the entire Galaxy team will arrive in Manila on Dec. 1.
Beckham's five year contract with Los Angeles Galaxy is about to expire, but he seems to be at a loss as to whether he will stay in the US or move somewhere else.
Beckham is reported to be considering a role in the 2012 London Olympics. There were talks of possible involvement with several European entities including English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers.
