article imageGalaxy of witnesses for phone hacking inquiry

By Alexander Baron     Nov 21, 2011 in Crime
London - Yesterday, Monday, it was announced that a small galaxy of witnesses would be testifying before the Leveson Inquiry, including J.K. Rowling and others famous and not so who may have been targeted by the hackers.
Harry Potter And The Evil Press Barons, how does that sound for the title of J.K. Rowling's next book? Most of the people who testify at the Leveson Inquiry hearings won't see the humour, including Miss Rowling herself.
Yesterday saw the actor Hugh Grant and the parents of schoolgirl Milly Dowler giving their evidence. While Grant was dismissed by one tabloid as a man with an agenda - hatred of the press - the same cannot be said for Bob and Sally Dowler. In March 2002, their youngest daughter was snatched off the street in Walton-on-Thames and murdered by psychopath Levi Bellfield, literally in the blink of an eye. A massive missing person investigation was launched by Surrey Police, but obviously as time went on, everyone feared the worst. It was six months before her skeletal remains were found in woodland some 25 miles away, but in the early days, when messages on her mobile phone were deleted, her parents clung to the belief she might indeed be alive. The Dowlers testified together, and 9 years on, the pain was still visible in their faces.
Milly Dowler may not have been the only murder victim whose phone was hacked. Also on the witness list is former murder suspect Chris Jefferies, whose vilification after his arrest led to contempt proceedings against two tabloids. The parents of missing presumed murdered 3 year old Madelaine McCann are also lined up for the Inquiry, which is expected to last well into next year.
Today, comedian Steve Coogan is expected to testify; Thursday: Sienna Miller, Max Mosley and the author JK Rowling, and Monday should see the singer Charlotte Church and the aforementioned Chris Jefferies.
