New Delhi - At least 15 eunuchs were killed and dozens more injured as fire broke out in a tent at a convention of eunuchs gathered in New Delhi.
Fire broke out at convention of eunuchs who were gathered in their thousands in the Indian city of New Delhi. Eunuchs had convened from India, Bangladesh and Nepal to attend the event that is held every five years. Latest reports from Time Live say that at least 15 eunuchs were killed in the blaze and 34 injured.
Fire engulfed a makeshift hundred foot long tent, with the most likely cause attributed to an electrical short. The fire ignited a gas cylinder that exploded. Swapna Kumari, who was attending the event, said "We were serving tea to some activists from Haryana when the tent above our heads just exploded in flames" Channel News Asia reported.
As crowds of people fled from the fire, local residents rushed to assist people trapped in the fire, pulling the injured from the flames. Emergency services arrived to tackle the blaze. Arab News reported that Police official Sanjay Jain said it was not certain if all the dead had perished in the fire or had been trampled to death in the rush of people trying to escape. The state government has ordered an inquiry.
