After John Galliano made a fool of himself with a drunken anti-Semitic rant in a Paris bar, the actress Natalie Portman publicly chastised him, and Abraham Foxman of the self-styled Anti-Defamation League wrote to the actress
praising her for her “courageous and heartfelt words in speaking out against [Galliano’s] anti-Semitic comments”.
Wow, like that took real courage. Jackie Mason spoke out not against
Galliano but in defence of
Mel Gibson after his earlier drunken rant. That took real guts, swimming against the stream. When a man is drunk, he'll curse his own mother, said Mason
. With the wisdom of hindsight and his appalling treatment of the mother of his child, Gibson wasn't simply drunk, he was in serious need of psychiatric help, but all credit to Mason.
Being one of the Chosen
, Mason can get away with saying a lot of things about Jews that others can't. When he said similar things about blacks, one black in particular
, he was attacked with the usual boring mantra of racist
, but Mason is no bigot, the man is a comedian, and a darn good one, although Israeli-Arabs may beg to differ. This rant
shows an incredible naïveté and ignorance of the true nature of both Zionism and the Western treatment of the Arab world, but at least he has found some common ground with Abraham Foxman! Okay, Jackie, enough of defending the demented Mel Gibson and attacking A-rabs, what have you got in store for us limeys?
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO JACKIE MASON
, his one man show, opens at Wyndham's Theatre on February 13, 2012 for five weeks only. The embedded video (after the four photographs below) shows him blowing his own trumpet with his characteristic modesty. You may like Mason, you may find him offensive, but one thing is for sure, you won't find him dull.
