Tempe - A rollover accident during rush hour on an Arizona freeway nearly ended in tragedy after two small dogs jumped from the wrecked vehicle and led police on a desperate chase through the busy traffic before finally being safely captured
ABC's Air15 caught the scene on videotape as one of the two dogs dodged in and out of traffic barely avoiding being run over by the fast moving cars.
Motorcycle cops from the Arizona Department of Public Safety pursued the dog for over a mile before cornering the speedy canine against the concrete median barrier.
DPS Officer Martin Bennett, who caught the pooch told media representatives “Our main concern is for the dog’s safety and for the safety of others on the highway." Bennett said the dog nipped at him when he tried to pick her up, he had to calm her down before he was able to move her from the congested freeway.
Bennett said he thought the dog was a Yorkie. The motorcycle cop said he was already receiving some good natured ribbing from fellow officers over the foot-chase. “The jokes are already rolling in. I’m sure this will be mentioned at my retirement party years from now. I was just happy to get the dog and get him to safety," said the dog's rescuer.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital for treatment. She was later reunited with her pets.
