U.S. Secret Service say bullet smashed White House window

By JohnThomas Didymus     Nov 16, 2011 in Crime
Washington - The U.S. Secret Service and the FBI are investigating an incident of shooting in which a bullet hit a White House window and smashed it. The bullet, according to Secret Service sources, was stopped by a second layer of "ballistic glass."
The shooting is believed to have occurred last week Friday. According to a statement by the Secret Service, investigators found the bullet and a round of ammunition on the grounds of the White House on Tuesday.
Fox News reports the FBI joined the Secret Service responsible for security of the President in the investigation on Wednesday. A suspect in the shooting incident has been named. He is 21-year-old Oscar Ortega-Hernandez who has a record of arrests in Idaho, Utah and Texas, in cases involving drugs, alcohol and assault. Fox News reports Ortega is believed to be mentally ill.
U.S. Park Police investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Ortega-Hernandez after they discovered a rifle in an abandoned car on Friday, near the Roosevelt Bridge. NBC reports that evidence from the car linked it with Ortega-Hernandez. The car, according to information from the Secret Service, appears to have been involved in a gun duel with another car about half-mile distance from the White House. NBC reports that investigators have, however, not conclusively connected the incident of gun shots heard on Friday with the bullet that smashed through the window of the White House and the bullets found on the grounds of the White House. NBC says the Secret Service, Park Police and Arlington Police all responded to gun shot sounds reported at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday night.
U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser, said Ortega-Hernandez is wanted on a charge of carrying dangerous weapon. The Secret Service have described Ortega as Hispanic, male, 5'11" and weighs 160 pounds. He has brown eyes, black hair and is of medium build. NBC reports further that:
"He[Ortega] has several dots tattooed on his right hand, 'Israel' tattooed on the left side of his neck and several tattoos on his chest and back, including his surname 'Ortega,' hands clasped in prayer and rosary beads."
Sources say President Obama and his wife Michelle, were away in California at the time of the shooting.
