Washington - The ex-boyfriend of Sharon Bialek, the woman who last week accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment, held a news conference on Monday where he confirmed her story that Cain sexually harassed her when she contacted him for a job.
Reuters reports Attorney Gloria Allred introduced the man Victor Zuckerman:
“The witness is a pediatrician. He was the former boyfriend of Bialek. He met Mr Cain with Bialek and she told him that Cain had engaged in inappropriate touching of her shortly after the alleged incident took place."
The Washington Post , reports that Victor Zuckerman, in the company of Bialek's lawyer Gloria Allred, said, at the press conference, that after Bialek lost her job at the fundraising arm of the educational foundation at the National Restaurant Association, he (Zuckerman) advised her to contact Cain, former head of the association. Zuckerman said when Bialek returned from seeing Cain in Washington, she complained to him that he groped her in a car. Victor Zuckerman said:
“I can confirm that when she returned, she was upset, she said that something had happened and that Mr. Cain had touched her in an inappropriate manner."
Zuckerman said that before the incident, Bialek had spoken to him about Cain, describing him as a man of "warmth and wit." But she was very upset about Cain groping her in a car at her trip to Washington to see him "for job advice."
Zuckerman said that after other women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment, Bialek told him that the allegations did not surprise her, having known Cain herself. Gloria Allred said Zuckerman felt compelled to come forward after Cain denied knowing Bialek. According to Zuckerman, he attended a party given by the NRA while Bialek worked with the company, and witnessed conversations between Cain and Bialek at the party.
The Washington Post reports Gloria Allred urged Herman Cain to speak the truth:
“Mr. Cain needs to be honest and forthright with the public that he does know Sharon...We look forward to Mr. Cain’s response and deeply appreciate the corroboration that Dr. Zuckerman will provide today....He needs to come is the time.”
Digital Journal reports that Herman Cain, former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, has repeatedly denied the series of sexual harassment accusations against him. He claims that he does not remember the alleged incident and that he doesn't even remember having known Bialek. Cain, according to The Washington Post , says the accusations against him are baseless and that facts about Bialek's background show she is a "troubled woman." Cain's campaign has pointed to information about her financial history and claims her stories of sexual harassment are motivated by financial gain.
Cain's team has been saying that recent allegations have had no adverse effect on his campaign. But The Washington Post reports that a new CNN poll shows support for Cain has dipped 11 percent. A Reuters/Ipsos poll also suggests that the recent allegations are having a negative effect on Cain's political campaign. The poll showed that he is trailing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
