Springfield - Thieves have stolen a three foot copper sword held by a statue at the site of Lincoln's memorial tomb in Springfield, Illinois.
The theft of a copper sword from the burial site of Abraham Lincoln saw history repeated, as the stolen item was a replacement for the original bronze one stolen in 1890. Copper thieves targeted the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, removing a three foot sword from the statue of a civil war officer.
According to CBS local the statue is atop a balcony and remains unguarded at night. Four flights of stair lead to the balcony, where four statues are grouped around Lincoln's tomb. The terrace also features a cordon of 37 shields. (Naharnet).
Dave Blanchette, a spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, said "We just cannot imagine why someone would even think about doing it, let alone climb up the steps and actually do it" the Daily Mail reported. No one is quite sure when the theft took place but it was sometime between September and early November. Blanchette said the intention is to fix the statue.
The site was originally funded by citizens of Springfield who formed the National Lincoln Monument Association to raise funds to commemorate the death of Lincoln in 1865.
