article imageToronto's Dundas West has a special air past Dufferin Street

By KJ Mullins     Nov 9, 2011 in Lifestyle
Toronto - Along Dundas Street West just past Dufferin in Toronto the never ending sound of construction is ongoing. The area known as part of 'Little Portugal' is being refit with underground pipes.
It's not just the street being revitalized, the area itself is growing while staying the same.
Dundas Street West between Dufferin and Brock is a sleepy little area of town. While the same area on Queen Street West has become a trendy art mecca and along College Street has evolved into a foodie haven, this area has still not quite caught up.
This part of the city is known for being family oriented, with small houses snaking along streets that lead into the roads that connect the main thoroughfares.

Butchers, bakeries and corner stores are owned and operated by the same people that have been in the area for decades. There is growth though in recent years as more shops emerge like Beadle's.

Murals colour many of the corner brick walls showing the artistic side of the area as does graffiti tags that give a run down feel in spots.

It's not the 'happening' part of the city of Toronto. This area is more laid back, where workers toss off their business day uniforms and relax with their families.

It's not the city and yet not the suburbs, its that in between spot where different economic levels merge as one depending which street one resides on.

With parks and playgrounds hidden away on the side streets the public doesn't see the every day life that makes this area home to many. What is seen are older buildings and older business with new shops sprinkled in. The old and the new merging to give this part of town a special air all its own.
