article imagePastor asks for food donations; limo will make delivery

Garden Grove - An email sent to congregants of the Crystal Cathedral in California is requesting food donations for founder Robert H. Schuller and his wife, who is suffering from pneumonia. The email also states that a limo will deliver the donated items to the couple.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Pastor Jim Kok sent out the email on behalf of Schuller and his wife, Arvella. He states that Arvella is "very weak" but wishes to keep her situation "under the radar" since the couple does not want to receive get well cards. They are requesting meals to be delivered over the next 3 to 4 weeks.
The email goes on to state certain food donation guidelines such as no salt, sweets, meals with protein, or fruit plates. Egg dishes such as quiche "would be good".
According to CBS Los Angeles, some of the congregants are upset over the fact that a limousine will be used to deliver the meals to the couple when the church owes $50 million to creditors.
Family members who run the church are accused of misappropriating funds while the church itself has struggled financially in recent years.
In 2010, the board of the church filed bankruptcy, and the church has received offers from Chapman University to buy the building.
The Protestant church was founded by Pastor Robert H. Schuller in 1955. It is located in the Orange County city of Garden Grove. The church is actually not a cathedral; the church's name is merely an alliterative colloquialism.
