Centerville, Iowa-Eighty-three year old City Council candidate, pensioner Ben Clifford Dawson, has denied an October 22, 2011 sexual event that has brought prostitution and attempted sexual abuse charges against him.
The complaint was filed in Appanoose County, Iowa, by 33-year-old Melissa Drew who had purchased a home from him 10 years ago. In an ABC News report, according to Mr. Dawson, Drew had been borrowing money from him for a multitude of reasons over the years---getting new vehicle tyres or to visit her sick mom. But she had not been able to repay the $6,500 debt when he requested full payment, an action which resulted in a different story from each individual.
Des Moine’s KCCI.com stated that the investigation said that Dawson had made the offers for the sexual pay-off several times since the original loan in June, as Drew had refused to repay him. Meanwhile, Melissa Drew’s story is that Mr. Dawson had offered sex acts in exchange for the loan. He then grabbed her and began kissing her neck…allegedly without her consent.
However, it was at the time of the original loan that Drew said Ben Dawson had grabbed her and kissed her neck…not the offers he had made since then to her. For some reason, she had withheld the information from the police until later on when Dawson had demanded the money in full.
On November 1, 2011, NBC New York stated that when Drew was arrested on prostitution charges and a charge of intent to commit sexual abuse---both were aggravated misdemeanor charges. He then posted a $2,000 bond to get out of jail. According to the Centerville police Chief Tom Demry, “We had three previous reports of activity like this on him in years past.”
With the city election to be held on November 8, 2011, the charges may or may not influence Dawson’s chance of being voted as Centerville’s council member.
