article imageIncendiary Halloween pic of ghoulish Obama with bullet in head

By Joan Firstenberg     Nov 1, 2011 in Politics
Richmond - A GOP committee in Virginia County is under fire for issuing an image of President Obama as a ghoul with a bullet through his head. Meant as a Halloween joke, it's been criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike, who called it disgusting and violent.
The original email was sent out by the Loudoun County GOP and it not only pictured Obama as a zombie, but it included a picture of a disfigured Nancy Pelosi as well. It had the caption,
"We are going to vanquish the zombies with clear thinking conservative principles and a truckload of Republican candy,"
The New York Daily News reports that in order to create the email, the makers used a copyrighted Shepard Fairey AP photo of Obama while he was still serving in the Senate. The email was supposed to be an invitation to a Halloween parade. But it went viral. And when it did, the complaints started pouring in. Here's Pat Mullins, chairman of the Virginia GOP Party,
"The disgusting image used today on a mass e-mail has no place in our politics. Ever. The Republican Party of Virginia condemns the image and its use in the strongest possible terms."
Brian Coy, spokesman for Virgina's Democratic Party said,
"This is a disgusting and violent portrayal of the president of the United States,"
And the Republican governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, called on the Loudoun group for an apology. After that, Mark Sell, chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee, issued this lopsided apology.
"The Loudoun County Republican Committee yesterday sent an email to its members that represented a light-hearted attempt to inject satire humor into the Halloween holiday. Apparently, some individuals have interpreted an image of Barack Obama that appeared within the email as intending to portray the president as a victim of a violent crime. Nothing could be further from the truth, and we deeply and sincerely apologize to the president and anyone who viewed the image if that was the impression that was left. The LCRC deplores any effort to display, suggest or promote violence against the president or any other political figure."
Even the local new outlet, the Loudoun Insider said the image when way to far,
I am no fan of Barack Obama, but putting up a photo of him as a zombie with a bullet hole in his head???????????? Like him or not he is the legitimately elected the President of the United States and Commander in Chief of our armed services in a time of war. THIS IS DISGUSTING AND SHAMEFUL. Someone should send this to the US Secret Service.
The Washington Times reports that state Senate Minority Leader Thomas K. Norment Jr., James City Republican, said
“Even if intended to be humor, there is no place and no excuse for the dissemination of images depicting violence against our leaders. I denounce this image and call on those responsible to do the honorable thing and take full responsibility for their actions."
