Guadalajara - Canadian athlete Christine Girard set a new record yesterday at the Pan American Games -Guadalajara 2011, winning the gold medal in weightlifting in the 63 kg category.
With a combined lifted weight of 238 kilograms, the Canadian athlete Christine Girard achieved the gold medal for Canada at the Weightlifting Center in Guadalajara, surpassing the previous record of Leidy Solis from Colombia who lifted 224 kilograms in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, 2007. Girard had obtained Silver Medal at the 2007 Pan American Games.
The silver medal went to Colombian Esther Palomeque who lifted 235 kg, and the bronze to Luz Acosta of Mexico, with 230 kg.
In an outstanding performance in which she broke two continental records, Girard, 26, born in Elliot Lake, ON, currently a resident of White Rock, BC, got her first mark with 106 kilograms in the snatch and then with 132 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 238 Kg, setting a new Pan American record.
Leslie Armijo of Chile (201 kg.), Martha Lourdes Malla of Ecuador (195 kg.) and Silvana Saldarriaga from Peru (174 kg) escorted the medalists.
