Officials from Libya's National Transitional Council have stated that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was captured near Bani Waldi on Saturday night, alive and uninjured. However Saif also appeared on Syrian TV on Saturday night, saying he would continue fighting.
Reports are emerging from Libya that National Transitional Council officials claim Col. Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been captured alive and uninjured in Nessma, close to Bani Waldi. Apparently he was caught along with Gaddafi’s spokesman Moussa Ibrahim, previously declared captured on Thursday. Reuters reported that NTC military commander Abdel Hakim Belhadj said Ibrahim was captured in Sirte on Thursday, but latest claims contradict earlier reports.
According to theDaily Mail an NTC spokesman said the Osoud el Wadi brigade captured Saif on Saturday night, and MSNBC report fighters saying Ibrahim and Saif Gaddafi are being transported to Mistrata. These latest claims, which remain unverified, are at odds with earlier reports that stated Saif had his lost both his arms in the fighting.
A report in Dnaindiaappears to refute the claims regarding the capture of Saif, as they report that he appeared on the Syrian Alrai TV channel on Saturday night. During his appearance he said “I am in Libya, I am alive and free and willing to fight to the end and take revenge.” Gaddafi supporters have named Saif as the heir to his father and charged him with leading resistance fighters.
Even with the death of Col. Gaddafi the NTC propaganda machine is still at work, resulting in scepticism over reports unless they are accompanied by photographic evidence. If the latest NTC claims regarding the capture of Saif al-Islam are true he will be the one remaining member of the Gaddafi regime subject to an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court.
