article imageOp-Ed: NFL — Polamalu fined $10,000 for calling his wife during the game

When it comes to most people, family is the most important thing in their life no matter what they are doing. Safety Troy Polamalu showed that this past weekend when he made a phone call during the game after getting injured.
Most of the times when you think of someone getting in trouble for having a phone on the sideline you think aw man he was tweeting. Well not this time, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was on the sideline after suffering a very mild concussion using a cell phone to let his wife know that he was okay.
The NFL rules clearly stat
No player can be in Possession of cell phones in the bench area during a game is prohibited beginning 90 minutes before kickoff through the end of the game.
Now that is understandable when it comes to people tweeting and making post to their facebook page, because they may tweet or say something in the heat of the moment. This situation however is a completely different situation when you think of how serious a head injury can be.
Watching the play you could see that Polamalu was clearly hit in the head with a knee while he was trying to make a tackle in the backfield. Polamalu got up kind of woozy and went straight to the sideline to talk to the team doctor and get checked-out. Polamalu did not have his phone to call his wife and let her know he was okay so he used the team’s doctor phone to make the call to his wife.
So first off, he was not tweeting, and from what I know you cannot tweet from another person’s phone if it is already linked to your phone. Second of all, this is a serious situation when you think about Polamalu never really missing a game or leaving game. Third, it was a head injury which can be very serious. Finally…IT WAS HIS WIFE!
There are probably many of players that wish they could call their wife or kids and let them know that they are fine after a serious injury. Are you telling me that just because you are a football player your family does not care or don't matter? Then on top of that it was not a small fine of $500 or 5,000, it was a $10,000 fine.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had this to say about the phone call
Polamalu was calling his wife to assure her he wasn't seriously injured. He sustained what the team called a "very mild" concussion and was removed from the game as a precaution. It wasn't a personal call. He wasn't checking on his bank account. He was talking to his wife to let her know that he was fine.
Tomlin hoped that the NFL would not fine Polamalu for his phone call, but given the way the NFL is I was not surprised.
