The production was being staged at the Hartford High School's Government and Law Academy on October 14. The school's nursing academy was also present.
The premise of the musical
is of a high school where gay kids are the norm and straight kids are subject to discrimination. Jocks are the outcasts and brainiacs are the cool kids. One of the main focuses of the musical is of a heterosexual courtship between characters Kate and Steve and the struggles they face due to their relationship.
As a kiss between two of the male actors happened during one of the scenes, many students reacted with a loud clamor. Some of the students voiced their disgust at the sight of the kiss.
reports that the students who walked out of the production were mostly male and were largely comprised of members from the high school football team.
According to Fox Connecticut
, the school received complaints from concerned parents throughout the rest of the day. A few pulled their children out of school early, while another parent showed up at the school's main office and began reading sections of the Bible that condemn homosexuality.
Parents and students had been notified weeks
earlier about the musical taking place, and that there might be some same-sex affection shown during the performance. Some parents initially rejected the idea and wanted the musical cancelled, but organizers chose to proceed with the production.
Organizers of the musical defend their decision to stage the performance at the high school. They claim that the musical teaches tolerance of LGBT youth and denounces bullying.
