Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin in an interview at Mail on Sunday said that they have put in a lot of energy and time into "Mylo Xyloto" and that he can't imagine anymore of recording another album after it. Chris Martin quoted
: "This could be our last album. It’s the distillation of three years’ work and right now I can’t imagine where another one would come from."
The Devon, England native then added on how he feels the competition from Adele and Justin Bieber at the moment, saying
: "Now we have Justin Bieber and Adele to compete with and they’re a lot younger. We have to have the energy to put as much effort into our work as they do. If it’s over, it’s over and I can live with that. The most important thing always is to proceed as if every album is the last and not expect anything more."
will be released in vinyl, CD and digital formats, with a limited edition "pop -up" version where it will feature a 12" x 12" hardback book with graffiti art by "pop-up" artist David A. Carter. The album features "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" as the first single and "Paradise" as the second single. It also includes "Princess of China" in collaboration with Rhianna.
The band's new album is about the story of two lovers - Mylo and Xyloto
- living in a repressive urban neighborhood. Something to be noted about the album is the influence of old school graffiti art, which the band made sure the fans will have, by giving out the "bonus" 64 page hardback "pop-up" book. Coldplay have actually been creating concept albums before, like their previous releases -- X&Y
and Viva la Vida
-- similarly featuring single overall themes. Mylo Xyloto
is just like that, though with a sort of unified story of the two protagonists.
In terms of the lyrical and musical styles used, the first single "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall", employs one of UK bands most favorite Brit-Pop melodic sound formula -- a fusion of pop music and guitar sound. The song moves in with a rave-keyboard electronica euphony, something that kicks into a dance tune than a rock anthem, in the same way like Snow Patrol's song Just Say Yes
However, something to be noted is the outright similarity of the song with other songs, particularly The Sacados song Ritmo de la Noche
and Peter Allen's I Go to Rio
. Though, the band credited some elements to Peter Allen in their official website
, this came to mind other similar melodies they had in Viva la Vida
(from Joe Satriani's) and the sampling they did in Talk
(from Kraftwerk). Still, the first single should be more than a pleasing appetizer to the intimate and clubby Paradise
and the leaked Rhianna ballad duet Princess of China
Mylo Xyloto's track listing includes 14 songs and Coldplay fans would still have to wait until Oct.24 to get their hands on the full LP. Chris Martin tells only three people have actually heard the full album (which doesn't include Gwyneth Paltrow).
Rolling Stones gave the album a four star positive review, saying
: "Prominent elements prop up the sonic cathedrals with Jonny Buckland's guitar, which is riffier and more muscular than ever, and Euro-house synths that wouldn't sound out of place at a nightclub in Ibiza."
That being said, Coldplay's new album should make fans hope for the band to find another spark and motivation -- to go back to the studio for another recording and continue making music -- that would be an alternative to what Justin Bieber had been offering.
