At 11:16 local time on Thursday in Bali an earthquake has struck the region and left scores injured or hurt. No tsunami was expected with the quake occurring 60km under the ocean floor.
Fifty or more people were hurt in the quake which was recorded as being centered roughly 10km southwest of Bali and 60km deep. The quake was also felt on Java and Lombok islands which neighbor Bali.
Only three people are reported so far to have suffered critical injuries in the temblor, with some victims having broken bones, head injuries and lighter wounds. The quake struck at 11:16 a.m. local time (1416 AEDT)
The Denpasar Police Headquarters was evacuated although the prisoners remained in lockup with the exception of a 14 year old who was being held. The boy was not allowed to leave the building.
While the USGS measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, The West Australian reports the temblor was measured at 6.8 by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (IMGA) of Indonesia and only 10km deep.
Endro Tjahjono of the IMGA was quoted in the article as saying “There was panic, everyone ran out of the buildings. When we returned to our office building, we saw some cracks on the wall and plaster had come off the walls,”
The shaking in the Kuta tourist district went on for several minutes Tjahjono said. Collapsed roofs, temple walls crumbled and cracks in some of the office walls were reported in the area.
Travelers staying in the hotels were evacuated in the regions tourist areas throughout the affected zone with Donna Hoole O'Leary stating "At first the trembles were slow and I thought at first kids were running past on the decking, there was a few second pause and then there was a huge loud rumble and the shaking intensified.
"I looked up at the buildings that surround us five-stories high, they were shaking from side to side."
Mrs. O'Leary had nothing but praise for the hotel staff who reacted quickly to get all the guests evacuated to a safe area.
So far no other tremors have been recorded.
