Man charged with rape of mother

Memphis - A 37 year old has been charged for the rape of his own mother. Victim advocates say this type of case is extremely rare.

According to WREG reports a 37 year old Memphis man is accused of sexually assaulting his 57 year old mother in their home last month. Court papers state that last the suspect asked his mother for help in changing a light bulb, but instead he grabbed her from behind and raped her. "It's awful," said Annette Griffin who lives in the neighborhood. But she didn't know the woman or the suspect and hadn't heard about the crime but says she is glad that the son is behind bars. ABC24 reports the victim tried to fight the suspect off, but he managed to wrestle her to the floor and raped her. The victim was able to escape and call police. The Commercial Appeal writes that the suspect was arrested over the weekend and is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
