Mikey Welsh, the former bassist for the band Weezer, has been found dead at the age of 40. According to the Associated Press, he was found in his hotel room in Chicago and there are no suspicious circumstances.
A tribute posted on the official website says:
"Dear friends and fans,
It saddens me and the guys in Weezer so much to say that our beautiful, creative, hilarious and sweet friend Mikey Welsh has passed away at the very young age of 40. A unique talent, a deeply loving friend and father, and a great artist is gone, but we will never forget him."
Welsh played bass for the band from 1998-2001 and his former band mates call his time with them “vital, essential, wild, and amazing”.
He left the band following a nervous breakdown and after that pursued a full-time career in art. On his official blog, his work is described as “distinct, bold, and aggressive”. Welsh first worked in art at the age of nineteen before joining the band. His earlier work included collages and watercolours, large-scale figures and abstracts featured in his later work.
On their website the band state that their show at RIOTfest, Chicago, which is scheduled for tomorrow, is still on.
Tributes are being posted on Twitter. One message from the current bassist, Scott Shriner, said:
"Really bummed about Mikey. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a talent... he made a special mark on the world with his art."
Examples of his art can be seen here.
